Roy Hodgson hits out at footballing 'myth' following Man United icon Wayne Rooney's Birmingham sacking

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has shared his thoughts on the high expectations placed on famous footballers when they become managers following Wayne Rooney's sacking by Birmingham after just 83 days.

Rooney was sacked by the St Andrews outfit this week after he endured a miserable 15-game stint at the Championship side, winning just twice. City CEO Garry Cook claimed recent results cost the Manchester United legend his job, while Rooney himself admitted he will be taking time away from football following the recent turn of events.

Asked about his former England forward Rooney ahead of his side's FA Cup third round clash with fellow Premier League side Everton on, Hodgson expressed sympathy for Rooney's situation, saying: "It's perhaps more a question of the climate people work in these days. I think sometimes the bigger-name players won't be given a chance at a top club or a club in an elevated position.

He added: "I'm thinking in particular Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard even more than Wayne, but unfortunately the way the climate is these days is that the judgement on them will come very, very quickly and will be quite severe.

"They'll be welcomed into the club because of their name and they'll be expected because they are Steven Gerrard and because they are Frank Lampard (that) suddenly you're going to come in and the team that you're going to be taking over, which hasn't been doing brilliantly is suddenly going to fly because you're here.
