Ross Wilson won't be missed by Rangers fans and 3 obvious candidates jump out at me to replace him - Barry Ferguson

Let's put it this way, now that Ross Wilson’s time at Rangers is up it’s fair to say he won’t be missed by many supporters.

And that, by leaving the way clear for someone else to take charge, it’s given the club an opportunity to make a much needed change at the top going forward. I think I’ve made my opinions perfectly clear over the last few years that the recruitment at Ibrox has fallen way short of where it should have been during Wilson’s tenure as Sporting Director.

I do think he deserves a big part of the credit for the money that’s been brought in over the last 18 months or so from the sales of Nathan Patterson, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey. It would be wrong to dismiss his part in those negotiations. But let’s just put it this way: when I heard the other night that Nottingham Forest were thinking about making a move for him, only one thought sprung to mind: Let’s get this done nice and quickly.

So I think it’s a huge positive for the club that Wilson was at the City Ground less than 24 hours later to put pen to paper on his contract. With so much work to be done at Auchenhowie this summer, it’s best for everyone that his situation has been resolved and that a new man has time to come in and hit the ground running from the moment the transfer market opens back up for business.

Because, the easy bit of being in charge of the comings and goings at any football club, is selling good players. The bit Rangers have struggled badly with has been replacing them with better ones. And that’s where this whole ‘player trading model’ has fallen down over the last few windows. If you need an example of what I’m talking about I’m afraid to say you don’t need to look very far.
