Ross Brawn talks up excitement factor for 2022 Formula 1 season

Formula 1‘s Ross Brawn has said that the 2022 season should provide very exciting racing and plenty of close-quarters action thanks to the new rules, with him predicting we’ll see more competition up at the front alongside Mercedes and Red Bull.

The new F1 season is fast approaching with the first testing session taking place next week in Barcelona, whilst the first Grand Prix of the year is in mid-March in Bahrain.

And the hope is that the racing is going to be closer than we’ve seen in many a year, with new aerodynamic approaches introduced to allow the cars to follow closer together.

According to Brawn, we’re set for an exciting season:

“We may see we don’t quite hit a bull’s eye in terms of following [directly behind another car] but we will still be so massively ahead of where we were because the old cars were dreadful [for racing].

“It’ll take a little while but I think we’re going to be in a far better place going forward with the type of car that we have.

“I honestly don’t think the regs will change the general order of things dramatically.

“I think it will bring it a lot closer and I think we will see some of what were the midfield teams challenging. We’ll have a bigger group of competitive teams.

“[Last year] we either expected a Mercedes or Red Bull to win unless something different happened.

“We’re blessed with a number of great drivers – [McLaren’s] Lando Norris, the Ferrari drivers [Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz], George Russell in the Mercedes. Any number of combination of drivers could give us a great season.

“Although there was a bit of a battle between McLaren and Ferrari [last year], if I’d been them very early in the year, I would have been putting everything I could into 2022.
