Rory McIlroy wins Wells Fargo with stunning final round in perfect US PGA Championship preparation

Rory McIlroy produced a stunning final round to lift the Wells Fargo Championship for the FOURTH time.

The Northern Irishman - a three time champion ahead of this weekend - was four shots behind leader Xander Schauffele after two rounds before reducing that gap to just one shot heading into the final 18 after a superb third round showing in North Carolina. And the world number two went even better today to claim the title finishing on -17 overall with a final day score of -6.

McIlroy goes into next week's second major of the year in the best possible shape with a major confidence boosting win. The US PGA Championship takes place in Valhalla and the 35-year-old will be fancied by many punters to add a third success to his 2012 and 2014 triumphs. Schauffele ended the tournament at the Quail Hollow Club as runner-up five shots off the pace in the end with Byeong Hun An finishing third and Jason Day and Sungjae Im tied for fourth.
