Rory McIlroy surges into joint lead ahead of the Memorial Tournament finale

Rory McIlroy will start the final round of the Memorial Tournament in a three-way tie for the lead after a third-round 70.

The world number three had put himself in contention on Friday and continued his progress on Saturday with a two-under round in Dublin, Ohio that has pushed him level at the top of the leaderboard alongside David Lipsky and Si-woo Kim.

That trio are a shot clear of a five-way tie for fourth which includes Viktor Hovland, while Collin Morikawa and Hideki Matsuyama are in another five-strong group on four under.

Shane Lowry is five shots off the lead on one under after a 70 and Seamus Power slipped back to two over after a 75.

LEADERBOARD

McIlroy picked up one birdie on the par-5 fifth during an unblemished front nine but a bogey on the 10th set him back.

Birdies on 12 and 15 offered him momentum, before another bogey on 16. But another birdie on 17 lifted him into a share of the lead for Sunday's tournament climax.

"First of all, it would mean a ton to me to win this tournament," he said after his round about the prospect of a potential victory at a tournament hosted by record major winner Jack Nicklaus.

"I've played pretty well here over the years without really having a realistic chance to win. So to be able to walk up that hill from 18 and get that handshake from Jack would be pretty nice.

"I won Arnold (Palmer)'s tournament a few years ago, but he had already passed by the time. So it would be so nice to be able to do it and have Jack be there and stuff. It would be really cool."

Lowry, meanwhile, is in a tie for 32nd and made a strong start to his third round with a string of birdies on five, seven, eight and the 11th.
