Rory McIlroy hasn’t fulfilled aim he set after last major win after US Open choke

Rory McIlroy's decade-long wait for a major continued after he lost out to Bryson DeChambeau at the US Open.

When he clinched the US PGA Championship in 2014, McIlroy voiced his ambition to win many more tournaments, claiming that he still had much to offer. But ten years later, on Sunday, he became the first player to secure a top-10 finish at seven consecutive US Opens without a win, a gut-wrenching streak that includes four second-place finishes.

He came agonisingly close to ending the wait for an elusive fifth major title at Pinehurst No. 2. The 35-year-old held a two-shot lead over DeChambeau with just five holes remaining but faltered under pressure, making three bogeys in his final four holes, including a devastating close-range bogey at the 18th hole which ended his chances.

The Northern Irishman rushed out of the venue in his Lexus, skipping the presentation ceremony and failing to congratulate his opponent. And so his last major title remains the Claret Jug he won by two shots at Hoylake.

In a 2014 interview with The Guardian following that win, he said: "I want to be the guy that goes on and wins majors and wins majors regularly, win tournaments. I'd love to be in that position.

"I've had chances before to kick on from there. I did after my second major at Kiawah Island. I kicked on for another six months and played really well.

"I just want to think ahead and go forward and try and win as many tournaments and as many majors as I can, because I feel like there's a lot more left in me."
