Roger Federer sends touching tribute to long term tennis rival Rafael Nadal as Spanish legend announces retirement

Roger Federer sent an emotional message to long term rival Rafael Nadal after the Spaniard announced his retirement.

Federer took to social media to honour his colleague after the tennis legend declared his imminent departure following his decision to play for Spain at next month's Davis Cup Finals.

Nadal will go down in history as one of the sport's all-time greats, with a trophy-laden career spanning two incredible decades. Federer, another titan of tennis, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram upon learning of Nadal's decision to retire.

"What a career, Rafa! I always hoped this day would never come," Federer wrote on his page. "Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in the game we love. It's been an absolute honour."

Tributes poured in from across the tennis world, including Coco Gauff's praise: "You are amazing! It's been so incredible to witness your greatness and work ethic and be able to learn from it. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter."
