Roger Federer's ‘crazy' comment with Rafael Nadal one win away from 21st Grand Slam

For the first time since 2009, Sunday could see Roger Federer eclipsed as the tennis player with the most Grand Slam titles. The Swiss star won a record 15th major of his career 12 years ago, overtaking Pete Sampras. Rafael Nadal, however, is now just a match away from eclipsing his long-term rival at the Australian Open.

Nadal will lock horns with Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final on Sunday morning with history on the line.

The Spaniard, who hasn't won a major Down Under since beating Federer in 2009 and has lost four finals since, is just a match away from a record 21st Grand Slam.

If Nadal does end up reigning supreme, he'll become the first player to move past Federer in over a decade.

The Swiss star went into the French Open in 2009 on 13 Grand Slam titles, one less than Sampras' record.

And with Nadal forced out of the competition due to injury that year, the veteran took full advantage by swashbuckling his way to victory.

Then at Wimbledon, mere weeks later, Federer did it again.

The Swiss star was made to dig deep in the final against Andy Roddick before winning overcoming the American, winning the match 5-7, 7-6(8-6), 7-6(7-5), 3-6, 16-14.

When quizzed on how it felt to be the tennis player with the most majors, Federer admitted it was 'crazy'.

"It's staggering that I've been able to play so well for so many years now and stay injury-free," he said at the time.

"I'm happy what I'm doing.

"It's crazy that I've been able to win so many in such a short period of time, I think.

"You know, I mean, of course there is a certain routine that's started to happen the last few years since I sort of became No 1 in the world.
