Roger Federer retires from tennis: Rafael Nadal pays tribute

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have been rivals on the tennis court for well over a decade now, but that rivalry is ending, with the Swiss star hanging up his racket after the upcoming Laver Cup.

There’s no denying that the pair have been incredible competitors, with us lucky enough to witness to all-time greats compete in the same era as one another, but despite that fierce rivalry, the respect is there.

No matter who you prefer out of the duo, it’s a sad day for us all as the historic doors shuts on arguably the greatest chapter that tennis has ever seen.

There has been an outpouring of support from all across the sporting landscape for Federer, whether that be Formula One stars or cricket icons, showing us just how well respected he is across the globe.

Of course, the tennis world itself is in mourning given the fact arguably the greatest ever player to pick up a racket is set to step away from the sport, so to see his colleagues share tributes is no surprise.

Rafael Nadal had to use two tweets to get his full message across, saying: “Dear Roger, my friend and rival. I wish this day would have never come. It’s a sad day for me personally and for sports around the world. It’s been a pleasure but also an honour and privilege to share all these years with you, living so many amazing moments on and off the court.

“We will have many more moments to share together in the future, there are still lots of things to do together, we know that. For now, I truly wish you all the happiness with your wife, Mirka, your kids, your family and enjoy what’s ahead of you. I’ll see you in London.”

We couldn’t have put it better ourselves, Rafa!
