Roger Federer retires: Five times the Swiss icon shocked the tennis world

Breaking news has just come through that Swiss icon Roger Federer has announced his retirement from professional tennis.

Next week’s Laver Cup in London will be his final ATP tournament before he gracefully bows out of the professional game. Federer will go down as one of the greatest to ever play tennis, having won nearly everything there is to within the sport.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has been struggling with an on-and-off knee problem for the last three years and has decided that now should be the time to bow out and retire from professional tennis.

Although the news has saddened the world of tennis and it certainly won’t be the same without him – it’s important to appreciate all the great moments he’s produced over the years.

So, with this – here are five times that Roger Federer shocked the tennis world.

Way back in 2003, we saw a 21-year-old Roger Federer obtain his first ever grand slam title. It was only fitting he did it at Wimbledon, a tournament he’s dominated so much over his illustrious career.

One of the many records that Federer broke within tennis throughout the years, but certainly one of the most impressive.

In 2010 Federer created a brand new record by reaching 23 consecutive semi-finals, which is to this day one of the most impressive records made by any player in world tennis. Did we mention it wasn’t just any 23 semi-finals… it’s 23 Grand Slam semi-finals, which is just mind-blowing.
