Rochdale Hornets launch new community team

League 1’s Rochdale Hornets have launched a brand new community team, with the aim of featuring in the North West Men’s League in 2023. 

The community team is the third team under the Rochdale Hornets umbrella. It joins the Women’s and Wheelchair teams that compete in the Rugby Football League’s competitions.

The newly established side featured in their first ever game on Saturday, winning 32-26 away to Portico Vine.

Stephen Strand has been appointed chair of the team, which is also managed by a group of volunteers.

Rochdale Hornets chief executive Steve Kerr said: “Our strategy for growth is based on increasing participation and spectatorship, so to welcome a community open-age team as part of the Rochdale Hornets brand is incredibly exciting.

“I’ve had the privilege of meeting with some of our new players and coaches. Their enthusiasm and passion for the game was fantastic. Whether you’re returning to the game or taking it up for the first time there’s an opportunity for you, and I’m incredibly proud of the work we’re doing in the community.

“I’d like to thank Supro Sport for sponsoring the playing kit along with Premier Kia and Russell Homes, our principal partners. As an inclusive club that welcomes all faiths, backgrounds, and abilities, I’d like to welcome our newest members. I congratulate Chris, Stephen and the team for taking this huge step forward with us.”

The Crown Oil Arena side will host England’s World Cup warm up clash against Fiji later this year. A date for the rearranged fixture is yet to be confirmed.

It will be a part of the club’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Fiji will return to Rochdale for the first time since their sell-out game against Ireland during the 2013 World Cup tournament.
