Roberto Mancini on the brink after footage emerges as ex-Man City boss set for massive payday

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation has reputedly decided to sack Roberto Mancini barely a year into his four-year contract.

Mancini, 59, signed that deal last summer and is reportedly being paid over £20million per year. Despite winning Euro 2020 with Italy, that success has not translated to his next job in international football for the former Manchester City manager.

Saudi Arabia exited the Asian Cup earlier this year at the round of 16 stage, losing a penalty shootout to eventual semi-finalists South Korea. Since then, they have struggled during World Cup qualifying, losing to Japan and Jordan while failing to beat Bahrain, Indonesia and Tajikistan.

State television in the Kingdom claims that the federation is negotiating to terminate his contract. Calciomercato reports that the exit clause in Mancini's deal is as high as £25million, with an agreement yet to be reached.

However, it appears unlikely that he will be in charge for next month's away qualifiers against Australia and Indonesia. Saudi Arabia currently sits third out of six teams in the third round of World Cup qualifying after four fixtures, with only the top two advancing directly to the tournament.

Following their most recent match on Tuesday, a 0-0 draw with Bahrain in Jeddah, footage emerged of Mancini arguing and gesturing toward the crowd behind the home dugout immediately after the game. That show of dissent has hardly helped his position.
