Rob McElhenney in tears and Ryan Reynolds speechless as co-owners react to Wrexham promotion

Rob McElhenney shed tears and Ryan Reynolds was left speechless after Wrexham won the National League title at the Racecourse Ground with a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood.

The Welsh club had to come from behind to complete a Hollywood ending to the season as Lee Ndlovu gave the visitors a lead inside the first minute. Wrexham soon returned to the script as Elliot Lee equalised before Paul Mullin scored twice in the second half to secure the win they needed to earn promotion back to the English Football League after a 15 year absence.

After the match McElhenney had tears in his eyes watching on from the stands. The Wrexham co-owners then explained their emotions when interviewed on the Racecourse Ground pitch after the players lifted the trophy in front of their home supporters.

"I'm not sure I can actually process what happened tonight," a clearly emotional Reynolds told BT Sport. "I'm still a little speechless.

"People said at the beginning: 'Why Wrexham? Why Wrexham?' This is exactly why Wrexham, what is happening right now is why."

McElhenney standing alongside Reynolds, added: "I think we can hear how it feels for the town, and that's what's most important to us. This is a moment of catharsis for them and celebration. For us to be welcomed into their community and to be welcomed into this experience has been the honour of my life."
