Riyad Mahrez reveals physio advice that played a part in Man City demolition of Manchester United

Riyad Mahrez was reminded of some advice from the Manchester City physio when he recalled his derby double against Manchester United.

City were in ruthless form as they took a 2-1 lead into the break thanks to a Kevin De Bruyne brace. Mahrez then scored two goals of his own in the second half to seal a fine win against United.

To settle the contest, Mahrez met De Bruyne's corner on the edge of the area to stroke a lovely volley into the far corner, with his effort taking a slight touch off the hapless Harry Maguire. For his second, he stayed just onside before hitting the ball high over David de Gea.

Reflecting on his goals, Mahrez revealed some regular advice from his physio was playing on his mind - just get the ball on target.

"First goal, a player touched it, but sometimes you have to hit the target," he said. "Like our physio says, 'Riyad, hit the target'. He [Maguire] touched it and it's in. The second one I tried to hit it high because he's good on the floor, De Gea. It hit his face and went in. I'll take them both."

With City focussing their attacks predominantly down the left, Mahrez had a quiet first half until his second-period impact. He said his mindset was always to remain focussed for when the inevitable chances arrived.

"I think I touched the ball four times in half an hour," he smiled.

"In my head I stayed focused, the ball would come and I'd have to make the difference. The first half was good, they took us on the counter, in the second half we were more patient, more controlled."
