Rivers United face Young Africans in CAF Cup, SA's Gallants face 2020 winners Pyramids

Rivers United face a quarter-final tie against Tanzanian club Young Africans during April in a quest to become the first Nigerian winners of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The closest a team from the most populous country in the continent came to winning the African equivalent of the Europa League was in 2005 when Dolphins finished runners-up to FAR Rabat.

Rivers reached the last eight by finishing second in Group B behind ASEC Mimosas of the Ivory Coast while Young Africans topped Group D ahead of US Monastir of Tunisia.

Ghana-born Paul Acquah has starred for Rivers in Africa, scoring five goals, one less than chart-topper Fakhreddine Ben Youssef from Egyptian outfit Pyramids.

Marumo Gallants, bottom of the South African Premiership with just three wins in 23 matches, were paired with 2020 Confederation Cup runners-up Pyramids.

Pyramids' squad includes South African forward Fagrie Lakay, who is in his second season with the Cairo club after joining from Cape Town City.

FAR, the only former Confederation Cup winners among the eight survivors, will face USM Alger of Algeria in a north African derby.

A tie between debutants Monastir, who eliminated title-holders Renaissance Berkane of Morocco, and former African champions ASEC completes the line-up.

The quarter-finals are scheduled for April 23 and 30, the semi-finals for May 14 and 21, and the two-legged final is set for June, on dates to be announced.
