Rio Ferdinand warns Newcastle transfer target he has 'wasted' a year of his career

Rio Ferdinand fears Newcastle United transfer target Jesse Lingard has 'wasted' a year of his career.

The Magpies were unsuccessful in a deadline-day approach for the England international, with a disagreement over a lofty survival bonus reportedly proving a sticking point.

West Ham were also linked with another loan move for Lingard, but the 29-year-old will remain at Old Trafford through until the end of his contract in the summer.

Interim Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick admits he can understand the attacker's disappointment, but has stressed there will be opportunities for him to win a starting spot in the coming months.

Ferdinand has questioned why Lingard stayed at the club following a sensational loan spell with the Hammers last season, insisting he would have walked into any Premier League side out of the top four.

He told his Vibe with Five show : “I wouldn’t be happy if I was a player.

“It’s almost like he has wasted a whole year of his career. A whole season of his career he has wasted.

“He has hardly played any games. He went to West Ham and did fantastically well. Everyone would have wanted to take him outside of the top four.

“Then, he goes back to Man United and doesn’t play. I was just baffled that he went back to Man United in the first place after having that taste of success and that taste of playing every week.

“Either, he was promised by Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] that he would get more game time. This window, you thought he would do everything to get out.

"Maybe he took too long to get to that point of wanting to leave.”
