Rio Ferdinand shares brilliant verdict on Man City's unsung hero after Crvena Zvezda victory

TV pundit Rio Ferdinand has likened Manchester City midfielder Rodri to a secondary school pupil playing against younger kids in his assessment of the club's unsung hero.

Goals from Julian Alvarez (2) and Rodri settled the scores for City on Tuesday night as they opened up their latest Champions League campaign with a rousing comeback victory. After falling behind, the treble-winners hit back to win the game 3-1 against plucky opponents Crvena Zvezda.

In the other Group G opener, RB Leipzig were also 3-1 winners against Young Boys. City play those two sides next month in the marquee European competition on October 4 and October 25 respectively.

While it was not exactly men against boys at the Etihad Stadium, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand made a brilliant point about Rodri when assessing his performance. Renowned for his defensive attributes, the 27-year-old has scored three goals this term.

Of course, he also grabbed the all-important match-winner in the Champions League showpiece last season when City finally added the grandest European trophy to their collection, after retaining their Premier League crown and winning the FA Cup against United at Wembley.

Having claimed their first Champions League crown last season, Manchester City are on a new mission - to clinch back-to-back European titles!

Blues fans won’t forget that magical night in Istanbul, but the slate is wiped clean now as Pep Guardiola and his men look to build a dynasty in the competition.
