Rio Ferdinand sends warning to Andre Onana after Manchester United howler vs Bayern Munich

Rio Ferdinand insisted goalkeepers are "paid to come in and make saves" after seeing Andre Onana let in a howler against Bayern Munich.

Onana was massively at fault for Bayern's opening goal, which came on 28 minutes courtesy of Leroy Sane. The winger only managed to stab a weak effort towards goal after being teed up by Harry Kane, but the Reds shot-stopper didn't manage to set himself and the ball rolled beyond him into the net.

United's £47.2million man was left laid flat out on the ground with his head buried in the turf. Sergio Reguilon and Lisandro Martinez went over to console their teammate, who was evidently furious with himself.

"This is a nightmare scenario for Onana," Ferdinand told TNT Sports at half-time. "He's as confident as you like with his feet, but as a goalkeeper, you're paid to come in and make saves.

"It's a great bit of skill from Sane and he’s set up but he doesn't hit it with any real purpose. It’s not wide of him, it's not in the corners.

"Onana’s reaction, he should save it, it is meat and drink for him. He should be picking this up and looking for his next pass. It's a very, very bad mistake and one that he needs to recover from."

United had started the game strongly, enjoying more meaningful possession and creating better chances. However, Sane's goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of them and Serge Gnabry was left free in the box to make it 2-0 just four minutes later.
