Rio Ferdinand names his next Manchester United captain and Harry Maguire successor

Rio Ferdinand believes Bruno Fernandes is destined to become Manchester United's permanent captain next season.

Speaking on the latest episode of his FIVE podcast, the ex-United legend was in awe of Fernandes' contribution in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa. Erik ten Hag's side got back to winning ways after the disappointment of drawing away to Tottenham Hotspur, with the Portuguese international netting the winner.

Fernandes has worn the armband in the absence of Harry Maguire this campaign - with the centre-back's future at Old Trafford uncertain given his lack of minutes across the season. And Ferdinand, who enjoyed rubbing United's victory over Unai Emery's side in, feels Fernandes is absolutely ready to take on the responsibility.

"Unai Emery was producing miracles, and who steps up to stop him? Bruno." joked Ferdinand. "Sit back down, Unai! Have a reality check and know your place."

Ferdinand added: "We deserved to win the game. Did you see Bruno’s numbers? Wow. "The guy - it’s remarkable what he is doing. If he was at Arsenal he’d probably have a statue now at the Emirates with the numbers he has done!

"Does Bruno take the captaincy next year? 100 per cent... I think he does. Since Bruno signed, he has been the most impactful player we have had. He’s wearing the armband while Maguire doesn’t play. I think it is a natural progression for him to be captain next season."
