Richard Arnold and Manchester United warned to avoid Ed Woodward mistake this summer

Manchester United have been warned to avoid repeating an Ed Woodward mistake in this summer's transfer window.

Under the previous CEO United splashed large amounts of cash on players who, up until present, have not performed to the high standard expected. Most notably was the return of Paul Pogba in 2016 who has this summer once again left on a free transfer having underwhelmed on his second spell at the club.

Jadon Sancho has also struggled after being signed for £76.5m last summer but it is hoped that he will improve under Erik ten Hag next season. According to Louis Saha, United's hierarchy most be wary of making the same mistake Woodward made while he was in position, before leaving at the end of last year.

He told BoyleSports Premier League: "Man United have to make the right choices and sign the right players for the club. It's very important not to panic buy, those in charge of signings need to make sure the philosophies at the club are right and that the players coming through the door are buying into the project.

"It doesn't matter how much you're spending, it's about quality. You don't need to spend £100m on a player who is going to disrupt your club.

"They don’t need to worry about being left behind by their rivals. Obviously the big teams are going to attract big names, but every team has problems that they have to deal with and United shouldn't be pushing the panic button."

Despite several players having left the club on free transfers, United have yet to make their first summer signing. MEN Sport understands that Ten Hag has made Frenkie de Jong his number one target this transfer window.
