Rhasidat Adeleke lowers more Irish records in Albuquerque

Rhasidat Adeleke smashed her Irish indoor 60m and 200m records at the Dr Martin Luther King Jr Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque, as the Dubliner began a massive year with a bang.

Adeleke lowered her own 60m mark of 7.17 to 7.15 on her way to taking the win in her first individual outing of 2024 .

She then returned to the track later in the schedule to break her old 200m record of 22.52 with a second-placed 22.49 behind training partner Julien Alfred, who took the win in 22.28.

There will be genuine hopes Adeleke can etch herself into history.

Bob Tisdall claimed gold in the 400m hurdles at the 1932 Games, but Irish sprint success at an Olympics is an exceedingly rare thing.

It would be a seismic achievement if Adeleke can make the podium in Paris this summer, though she remains grounded.

"If I thought about it [Olympics] too much, I'd end up getting overwhelmed," she said before Christmas.

"I feel like when it is closer to the time, I will definitely think of it more."
