Revolutionary choose-team-after-toss rule the highlight of SA20s playing tweaks

Any captain who's ever regretted the make-up of his playing XI after the toss will look on at the SA20 with envy following the announcement of several innovative playing regulations for the tournament.

When MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals kick-off the inaugural edition at Newlands on Tuesday evening, skippers Rashid Khan and David Miller will be allowed to finalise their teams after the coin has been flicked.

The team finalisation protocol is arguably the most eye-catching new regulation - a world first - meaning that teams will nominate 13 players for a particular match before whittling it down to 11.

The remaining two players will do duty as substitute fielders.

Tournament organisers are also hoping to "encourage attacking fielding" by not penalising a team for overthrows scored off an "intentional" run out attempt when the ball deflects off the stumps.

Similarly, the batting team can't sneak in a few extras when a batter's wicket has been hit off a free-hit delivery and the ball deflects.

Bonus points are on offer for sides who actively pursue "dominant" performances, with an extra log point being awarded if the winning team - who'll be awarded four log points for the triumph - has a match run rate 1.25 higher than the opposition.

More in line with the Indian Premier League, there are also two strategic timeouts of 150 seconds per innings to assist teams in "regrouping tactically".

The first ball at Newlands will be bowled at 17:30.
