Results to stand for controversial Great Ireland Run

Athletics Ireland and Dublin City Harriers have again apologised for the confusion and controversy surrounding last Sunday's Great Ireland Run, and the joint race organisers have confirmed that the results will stand.

Sunday's race was deemed to be a 10-kilometre track, however, "unforeseen circumstances" led to the race being a lot less than the specified distance.

The event, which took place in the Phoenix Park, also incorporates the National 10k championship, however, the actual distance of the race was just 8.5k.

"Athletics Ireland and the event organiser Dublin City Harriers wish to apologise to all participants for the unforeseen circumstances that led to last Sunday's Great Ireland Run (incorporating the national 10k championship) being less than the specified distance," read the latest statement.

The follow-up apology has also confirmed that results will remain in the record books, albeit with an asterisk, to highlight the race's shorter distance, which confirms that there will not be a re-staging of the event.

"Athletics Ireland have made the decision to award medals and placing in all categories for the National 10k Championship. We note that this decision was made following robust discussion and consultation.

"Note the race results will be recorded with an asterisk next to all references to highlight the shorter distance of the event.

"Additionally, the 465 registered starters from the National 10k Championship will also be offered a complimentary place in any one of the upcoming 2023 National 5k, 5-mile, or 10-mile road race championships. All 10k National Championship participants will be personally contacted by email to advise of this action."
