Residents told to shut windows as large fire breaks out

A road was closed for a number of hours following a large fire in Cardiff. Emergency services attended a large fire off Rover Way, Splott at around 10pm on Friday night which shut the road in both directions.

Residents were told to keep their windows and doors shut and avoid the area. Images appear to show one of the buildings near the 7Steel UK Recycling steelworks (formerly Celsa) on Rover Way in flames. South Wales Police said the fire took place at nearby Sims Metal.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said the road was closed from Ocean Way Roundabout to Tesco Pengam Green. At 10.40pm on Friday the spokesman said: "We're at the scene of an incident on Rover Way, Splott, Cardiff. The road is currently closed in both directions from Ocean Way Roundabout to Tesco Pengam Green.

"It is expected to remain closed for some time; please avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. We're grateful for your patience."

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service advised locals to close their windows and doors, while members of the public were urged to avoid the area altogether.

At around 10pm a spokesman said: "Fire crews are in attendance at a large fire in the Splott area of Cardiff. Local residents are advised to close their doors and windows. Please avoid the area if possible."

On Saturday morning South Wales Police confirmed the fire had been distinguished. A spokeswoman from the fire service confirmed that a stop message was received at 12.37am on Saturday.
