Residents evacuated after car smashes into Greater Manchester house

Neighbours were evacuated after a vehicle struck a house in Leigh. Emergency services were called out to Manchester Road, in Leigh, at around 10.15pm on Wednesday night (September 11).

Police, firefighters and gas safety engineers were all sent out to the scene, near Chapel Street. Some residents were told to leave their homes while road closures were put in place nearby.

A GMP Wigan and Leigh spokesperson said: "At around 10.15pm, we were called to reports of a road traffic collision between a vehicle and a house on Manchester Road in Leigh. No injuries have been reported to us, but there has been some structural damage to the house.

"Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and representatives from the gas board are at the scene to conduct initial checks. A number of residents in the surrounding houses have been temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

"A scene remains in place with some disruption to the area with road closures in place along Manchester Road in Leigh, the road will be reopened shortly and we thank the public for their patience."

In an update this morning, GMP says all residents returned to their homes late on Wednesday night, except those in one house. Roads were also opened in the area, with checks carried out to make sure there was no gas leak.
