Republic of Ireland set to play first game at the Aviva Stadium this September

The Republic of Ireland women's national team will play their first ever international at the Aviva Stadium later this year.

The clash with Northern Ireland, the duo's opening UEFA Nations League game, will take place on Saturday, 23 September with a kick-off time of 1pm.

The fixture will mark Ireland's first competitive game after the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer. It is the first time the team has ever qualified for women's football's biggest tournament.

"Playing in the national stadium is another big jump forward for our team and we encourage our supporters to come out to get behind the team," manager Vera Pauw said.

"We have had outstanding support in recent years in Tallaght Stadium - who we remain extremely grateful to - but we always said that if the right opportunity to play in the Aviva Stadium came along then we would look at it.

"This is that right opportunity and we want to have a record attendance to cheer the team on in their first game after the World Cup."

In recent years the Girls in Green have played their home games at Tallaght Stadium and sold out the venue for a decisive qualifier against Finland last summer in under an hour.

After qualification was secured with victory over Scotland in Glasgow, there were calls for a pre-World Cup send off game against France to be played at the Lansdowne Road venue.

However that game, alongside another warm-up fixture with Zambia, will instead take place at Tallaght with tickets for both games going on sale this week.

Hungary and Albania make up the four teams in Group B1 of the inaugural Nations League.
