Report -- Sky fire Teresa Weatherspoon after one season as coach - ESPN

The Chicago Sky fired Teresa Weatherspoon on Thursday after just one season as head coach, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Weatherspoon, who was hired in October 2023, was fired after the Sky finished 13-27, the third-worst record in the WNBA. The Sky missed the playoffs for the first time in six seasons and just three years after they won the WNBA championship.

Weatherspoon's arrival in Chicago marked her return to the WNBA after a lengthy stint working with the New Orleans Pelicans, first as a player development coach in 2019 and then as an assistant since 2020.

Despite their struggles under Weatherspoon in her first season, the Sky's season will be remembered for Angel Reese's historic rookie campaign, setting league marks for double-doubles and rebounds (a record A'ja Wilson later broke).

Reese took to X late Thursday, saying she was «heartbroken» over Weatherspoon's dismissal.

«I'm literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life,» Reese wrote in her post. «She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me. Many don't even know what it's like to be a black women in sports when nobody believes in you. You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short amount of time that will last forever.»

Weatherspoon, one of the league's most iconic players since its launch in 1997, was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.
