Remembering Adebayor signing for Man City 13 years ago

Thirteen years ago, Manchester City continued their spending spree by signing Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, and the rest is history.

As a 25-year-old Togolese international at the time, Adebayor signed a five-year contract, joining a talented group of City forwards.

In that same period, the Premier League club already had Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa Cruz, who were both signed in the offseason, as well as the Brazilian international Robinho, Craig Bellamy, and Benjani Mwaruwari.

However, Adebayor’s time in the blue half of Manchester didn’t have a fairytale ending as he made a fair few enemies along the way.

With that in mind, let’s go back in time to when one of Africa’s best players signed for Manchester City.

Before the 2009 Premier League season, Sheik Mansour purchased Manchester City, making them one of the richest clubs in the world at the time.

City’s UAE era officially kicked off on 1st September 2008 and has forever changed the face of the English game and the club.

With billions in transfer fees spent, City went from an average club to a serial Premier League winner. Speaking of money, the club signed several top players, including Emmanuel Adebayor for £25 million under Mark Hughes’ direction.

Adebayor first appeared in the Premier League in 2006, when he joined Arsenal from AS Monaco. During his time in North, London Adebayor started attracting interest from top clubs in Europe after he scored 30 goals in 48 games in the 2007-08 season, a career-best till this day.

Despite this achievement, he did not win a trophy with Arsenal as he was sent off against Chelsea in the 2007 League Cup final, igniting his move to Manchester City.
