Regent Road crash latest as trains resume after BMW driver avoids serious injury in horror smash
A BMW driver made a miraculous escape from the wreckage of a crash which brought trains to a halt in Greater Manchester. The black car smashed through a concrete barrier near the pedestrian walkway at the Regent Road roundabout, in Salford, at 2am on Friday (February 8).
It landed on its roof on the train tracks underneath. Remarkably, the driver was taken to hospital with injuries not thought to be serious.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed on Friday the driver, a man in his 30s, had not suffered any life-changing injury in the smash. He was arrested on suspicion of drink driving following the collision.
Services are back up and running on the busy railway line which runs through Eccles today (Saturday). Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales services were cancelled between Newton-le-Willows and Manchester while emergency repairs took place.
Services between Wigan North Western and Manchester were also affected. The BMW was the sole car involved in the crash and, luckily, no other injuries were reported.
The car was removed from the tracks before urgent repairs were carried out to the overhead cables. Services resumed late on Friday night.
A barrier remains on the footpath where the concrete structure has been damaged in the collision. British Transport Police is understood to be leading the investigation. Both GMP and BTP have been approached for updates.
