Good Morning Britain host halts broadcast to announce 'breaking' news
Good Morning Britain host Charlotte Hawkins halted Monday's (February 17) broadcast to announce some "breaking" news.
The presenter revealed that Ukrainian delegates had arrived in Saudi Arabia ahead of the US and Russia's talks that aim to seek an end to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
"Breaking news this morning. Ukrainian delegates have reportedly arrived in Saudi Arabia as America and Russia begin talks over a possible ceasefire," Charlotte explained.
"It comes as Sir Keir Starmer says he's willing to put British troops in Ukraine to maintain any peace deals."
Later on in the programme, co-host Richard Madeley elaborated on the news, saying: "The breaking news today, if you're just joining us, is that the Prime Minister's pledged overnight, in an article in the Daily Telegraph, to put UK troops' boots on the ground in Ukraine to help maintain any peace settlement they've negotiated.
"That was when we came on air, but in the past hour, the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has touched down in Saudi Arabia to begin talks with Russia about ending the war with Ukraine."
After first appearing to be frozen out of the talks, Ukrainian officials are now arriving in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
Charlotte and Richard then spoke to Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, who discussed the Prime Minister's plan to deploy British peacekeepers to Ukraine.
Starmer said that the crisis was a "once in a generation moment" and an "existential" question for Europe.
Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said that the UK was "ready to play a leading role" in Ukraine's ongoing defence and security, and pledged to commit £3 billion a year until 2030.
