RefCam footage shows how quick penalty decision was made in Crystal Palace vs Manchester United

The Premier League's recent experiment with 'RefCam' technology during the Crystal Palace vs Manchester United match has been hailed as a potential game-changer, despite it not being set to become a permanent feature.

For the first time in the league's history, referee Jarred Gillett was equipped with a 'RefCam' for the clash at Selhurst Park earlier this week. The initiative, confirmed by the league before the match, was part of a unique one-off programme designed to shed light on the challenges faced by match officials.

While the camera footage wasn't broadcast live, it has since been released. This innovative footage is being produced by Premier League Productions, which aims to provide a deeper insight into the challenges referees encounter in the top tier of English football.

The released footage allows fans to experience the match from the referee's perspective, complete with audio and pre-match protocols, from walking out of the tunnel to the pre-game handshakes with players.

Of particular interest to Crystal Palace supporters may be the penalty claim dismissed by Gillett during the match. The Australian can be heard saying he felt Tyrick Mitchel ran into United defender Jonny Evans before going to ground.

In one of the video clips, Gillett can be heard explaining his decision and discussing it with VAR Tony Harrington, who supports the on-field decision not to award a penalty. After Mitchell fell in the box, Gillett stated: "No, no, no way, no. He's run into him, for me."
