Red Sox place Masataka Yoshida on IL with hamstring strain - ESPN

The Boston Red Sox placed Masataka Yoshida on the 10-day injured list Sunday because of a left hamstring strain.

Yoshida suffered the injury in the third inning of Boston's victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, when he limped noticeably while running to second base on a double.

The Red Sox did not disclose a timeline for how long Yoshida will be sidelined, but the veteran designated hitter noted Saturday that the last time he injured his hamstring while playing in Japan, it cost him around a month's worth of games.

Yoshida, 33, will undergo tests when the Red Sox return to Boston ahead of a three-game series starting Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Red Sox also placed right-handed reliever Justin Slaten on the 15-day IL with inflammation in his pitching elbow. Slaten is 2-4 with a 4.60 ERA in 36 appearances this season.

Boston recalled catcher Mickey Gasper and left-hander Raymond Burgos from Triple-A Worcester to replace Yoshida and Slaten on the 26-man roster.

Yoshida is batting .274 with five home runs and 28 RBIs this season, his fourth with the Red Sox. He has appeared in just six games in the outfield this season, serving primarily as Boston's designated hitter.
