Record goalscorer Shane O'Donoghue calls time on Ireland career

Ireland's record goalscorer Shane O’Donoghue has announced his international retirement after his side’s EuroHockey Championship qualifier bronze medal win over Czechia in Dublin.

The Dubliner made 242 appearances for Ireland and scored 142 goals in the process since making his debut in 2011.

He represented his country in both the 2016 Olympics in Rio and the recent 2024 Games in Paris.

With Sean Murray absent, O’Donoghue wore the captain’s armband for the match, with a place in next year’s Euro A Championship out of the picture as only the tournament winners progressed.

Mark Tumilty’s side, who will compete in the B Euros, still finished off with a 4-0 win as O'Donoghue, Alistair Empey, Lee Cole and Louis Rowe were all on target.
