Real life of Paris Olympics Team GB star Adam Peaty - celebrity romance, Strictly and 'three years of hell'

Team GB star Adam Peaty will be gunning for a third successive gold medal in his signature men’s 100 metres breaststroke event at the Paris Olympics. The swimmer set the fastest time for 2024 in the discipline at the British trials - coming after a turbulent few years in which he has struggled with injury, a split from the mother of his son and a much-publicised battle with his mental health.

He said he is "thrilled" to be heading to his third Olympics, saying it will be "even more exciting" having it so close to home, with fans now able to cheer on the sports superstars. Spectators were banned from venues in Tokyo during the last Olympic Games because of the Covid pandemic.

Adam is hoping to join Michael Phelps as the only male swimmers ever to have won the same event at three successive Olympics.

Adam was born in Uttoxeter and began swimming at the age of just four. He was taken to his first swimming lesson with his friend Jack and says he hated it - but it soon turned into love.

At nine he joined Dove Valley Swimming Club and broke most of their records, switching to the City of Derby when he was 14. He began working under former Olympic swimmer Mel Marshall, who remains his coach to this day.

However he only started taking the sport seriously at the age of 17 when he was preparing for a night out with friends. He saw contemporary Craig Benson qualify for the Olympic semi-finals at London 2012 and according to his Team GB profile, fully committed to the sport from that moment.
