Reading FC miss out on ex-Rangers player with defender set for League Two transfer

Reading FC are set to miss out on the signing of Scottish youngster James Maxwell.

The 20-year-old, who started out at Rangers, has reportedly attracted the interest of Royals this summer as they continue to look for a new left-back.

However, a report by Football Scotland says he is 'on the verge' of joining League Two side Doncaster Rovers after a successful trial period.

Maxwell has experience over the past couple of years playing on loan with Queen of the South and Ayr having left Ibrox earlier this year. A move to English football was said to be his 'priority' and it now appears he has been granted his wish.

The report says Royals were 'very keen' on signing Maxwelll, while Rochdale were also considering an offer to take him to the Crown Oil Arena. A number of clubs in his homeland - including Partick Thistle - also expressed an interest in his services.

But Doncaster, who were relegated from League One last season, appear to have won the race for Maxwell ahead of the new season kicking off in just over a week's time.

Reading remain without a senior left-back in their squad with just over a week to go until the start of the new Championship season. Left-sided centre-back Tom McIntyre has been playing there during pre-season while former AFC Wimbledon left-back Nesta Guinness-Walker is currently on trial.
