Ratings: Havertz 5/10 as Chelsea's finishing woes continue

Chelsea left Germany with plenty to play for at the halfway stage of their Champions League round-of-16 tie with Borussia Dortmund, but will lament wasteful finishing after a 1-0 defeat at Signal Iduna Park.

The Blues' counterattacking potential was on show inside two minutes as only a last-ditch Nico Schlotterbeck challenge denied Mykhailo Mudryk a free run on goal. Joao Felix got on the end of Chelsea's best two chances, but sullied his fine approach play by blazing over with one andfiring against the bar with the other.

Dortmund struggled to pierce a well-organised Blues defence, with Julian Brandt the hosts' liveliest attacker by far in the first period, and Chelsea were dominating the early stages of the second half when jet-heeled forward Karim Adeyemi raced clear, rounded Kepa Arrizabalaga and slotted in the only goal. Despite continuing to enjoy the lion's share of chances, with Felix, Kalidou Koulibaly, Hakim Ziyech and Enzo Fernandez all going close to finding an equaliser, the Blues have an aggregate deficit to overcome in London.

Hope springs eternal for the second leg, with Chelsea comfortably forging the better chances despite the hostile atmosphere, as Graham Potter bossed the tactical battle with Edin Terzic for long periods.

Aside from wanton spending, the story of the Blues' season has been equally scattergun finishing. Once again, a spate of half-chances went begging in the game's infancy. Dortmund showed them how to counter properly, an approach they will look to replicate at Stamford Bridge.
