Rassie ban: Will SA Rugby jump to defence of Bok boss? 'We're still digesting it'

In Genoa

Will SA Rugby stand firm in support of its director of rugby Rassie Erasmus, or fold and accept his fate?

That is a question that will have to be answered sooner rather than later as the organisation grapples with Erasmus's second ban at the hands of World Rugby.

After a week of inaction following Erasmus's continued use of Twitter to highlight issues in match officiating on his side's European tour, the governing body flexed its muscles on Thursday when it issued Erasmus with a two-match ban that cut him off from match-day activities for Saturday's Test against Italy at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and next week's Twickenham encounter against England.

The ban also stretched to engagement with media and social media in relation to match officials, meaning Erasmus can't tweet about refereeing decisions for the Boks' season-ending fixtures.

SA Rugby was approached for comment by News24, with the organisation's president Mark Alexander saying they were wrapping their heads around the news.

"SA Rugby has seen the statement and they're still digesting it," Alexander said.

Erasmus was also approached for comment but was not available to do so, in line with the rules of the new ban.

Erasmus's battle with World Rugby, fresh after last year's ban for the leaked Nic Berry video that zoomed in on the Australian referee's mistakes in the first British & Irish Lions Test on 24 July last year, started on 6 November, the day after the 19-16 defeat against Ireland in Dublin where he highlighted an officiating inconsistency from match official Nika Amashukeli.
