Rare tall T20 chases: Five times the Proteas hunted down big T20 targets

South Africa reeled off their highest successful chase in a T20 game when they beat India by seven wickets in their first of five T20s in Delhi on Wednesday.

It was the second time South Africa has chased down a 200-plus total against India, but they've only managed a 200-plus chase three times since they first played T20 cricket in 2005.

Here are SA's previous five tallest T20 chases:

11 September 2007 - 208/2 v West Indies, Johannesburg

Just over a year after the 438 game, the Wanderers bore witness to a fusillade of boundaries that lasted an entire game.

In what was the first T20 World Cup game, Chris Gayle immediately made his mark in the format with 117 off 57 balls in what was a fire-starter of an innings.

T20 cricket was still 20 games in and no one had an idea of the importance of supporting acts, which meant Gayle's knock wasn't adequately buttressed by his teammates.

Devon Smith made 35 off 34 while four other batters made a combined 36 off 26 with two fours and two sixes.

205/6 looked more than adequate, but when Herschelle Gibbs's 90* off 55 and Justin Kemp's 46* off 22 laid waste to the West Indies, it wasn't.

It proved T20 cricket was a batter's game, but that total has only been bettered once in the T20 World Cup and 13 times since.

20 October 2015 - 200/3 v India, Dharamshala

A century isn't always a guarantee of success in T20 cricket, and India learnt the hard way in this series opener in the north of India.

Rohit Sharma's 106 buttressed India's 199/6, along with contributions from Virat Kohli (43), MS Dhoni (20) and Suresh Raina (14).

JP Duminy didn't always justify his immense potential during his career, but his unbeaten 68 off 34 balls laid the groundwork for the seven-wicket win.
