Raphael Varane reveals Erik ten Hag 'excitement' ahead of first Manchester United pre-season

Raphael Varane insists everyone at Manchester United is 'excited' to work under Erik ten Hag, but he admits there will need to be plenty of hard work to impress their new manager in pre-season.

Ten Hag has been appointed as the new United manager following Ralf Rangnick's disappointing reign as interim boss and will take charge of training for the first time before the end of the month.

United are due to begin pre-season training on June 27, with Varane one of those expected back at Carrington as part of the first phase after he was sidelined through injury over the recent international break.

The French defender endured a difficult debut season at Old Trafford, but he is looking to put things right in his second year, starting with a strong pre-season schedule.

"It’s a new season, it’s a new start, so everyone is excited to know about the new manager," he told club media. "Obviously, we want to do well and win every game so, for this, we’ll have to prepare for the new season, and I think it’s important for us to train hard and be ready.

"We want to be ready for the new season," he reiterated. "We need to work very hard and there will be a lot of training sessions, and a lot of games, so I think it will be interesting and a great moment to work very hard and to prepare for the season.

"I think it’s a different atmosphere, it’s pre-season so we have to get fit, we have to prepare," he acknowledged.

"I think it’s always exciting to play in front of our fans around the world, it’s a good experience for us, and it’s a good moment to prepare for the season."
