Raphael Varane names four things that make Manchester United ‘special and different’

Raphael Varane says the spirit, philosophy, passion and history of Manchester United make it a unique club, describing his debut in 2021 as a “great moment”.

The defender has gone on to play 59 times for the Reds, scoring his first goal against Brentford in February 2022. The France 2018 World Cup winner lifted his first piece of silverware at United 12 months later under Erik ten Hag, starting the League Cup final win at Wembley.

He is first-choice pick under the Dutchman, alongside Lisandro Martinez, who arrived last summer. Neither has been available in recent weeks due to injuries picked up during the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Sevilla.

Martinez is out for the season with a metatarsal injury while Varane also hasn’t played since April 13 due to his own setback. However, he could make a return against Wolves this weekend.

And speaking ahead of the clash, Varane unpacked his thoughts about United when appearing on BT Sport’s ‘What I Wore’ programme. Describing his debut against Wolves in August 2021, he said: “It was a great moment, a huge club [with] one of the best fans in the world.

“The history of the club is something special. Everything - the spirit, the philosophy, the passion around the club is something very special and different.”

Asked whether he feels pressure wearing the jersey, Varane replied: “I just feel like when I wear it, I just have to give 100 per cent of myself and to give everything on the pitch that I can. So when I wear the shirt I feel that mentality.”
