Raphael Varane is already showing why Manchester United signed Lisandro Martinez

For all of the negativity that last season attracted for Manchester United, it was their defensive woes that often attracted the most unwanted attention.

Whether it be against a title challenger in the form of Liverpool or Manchester City, or against a mid-table side like Brighton, United were cut apart open far too often. It left them recording their worst season defensively since 1978/79, conceding a staggering 69 goals in all competitions — 57 of which came in the Premier League.

It was at the epicentre of their woes and they cannot afford to repeat such a shameful record this coming season under Erik ten Hag. And despite winning all three of their opening pre-season friendlies, United, at times, have looked suspect at the back, being carved wide open by Melbourne Victory, conceding a soft goal against Crystal Palace and, despite keeping a clean sheet, riding their luck at times against Liverpool.

That area of the Ten Hag revolution remains very much a work in progress. However, in a bid to tighten up defensively and solve their recent troubles, United have reached an agreement with Ajax to sign centre-back Lisandro Martinez, who will join the club shortly.

The 24-year-old Argentine, who will bring a no-nonsense, crowd-loving style to Old Trafford, was one of Ajax's best performers last season, winning the club's Player of the Year award. Although he is capable of operating at left-back and in defensive-midfield, he is at his best when playing in his natural position in the heart of the defence.
