Raphael Varane gave Manchester United two things in impact vs Everton

Erik ten Hag reserved praise for Raphael Varane even though he only played in two minutes of Manchester United's 2-1 win at Everton.

Varane replaced Antony in the 93rd minute to help protect United's lead and he prevented a potential equaliser by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from a corner in added time.

United did not risk Varane from the start after he sustained an ankle injury in the 6-3 pummeling by Manchester City a week earlier and Victor Lindelof kept his place alongside Lisandro Martinez.

Ten Hag has rhapsodized about Varane a number of times this season and namechecked the centre-back again after his cameo at Goodison Park.

"We're also happy with all the subs who are coming on," Ten Hag told BT Sport. "Cristiano making the winning goal, clear, but also Scott (McTominay), Rapha.

"Rapha was, in the end... you mentioned some difficult situations and you see how important Rapha is there with his organisation and heading capacity."

Varane could return to the United starting XI against Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday night in the first of three consecutive home games.

United then host Newcastle on Sunday and entertain Tottenham next Wednesday.
