Rangers were rattled, Motherwell will score more goals if we play like that, says star

Liam Kelly reckons goals will flow for Motherwell if they keep playing the way they are.

The Fir Park skipper says the Steelmen’s performance in the 1-0 defeat against Rangers at Ibrox shows they’re on the right road, and urges his team-mates to keep going – especially with Celtic looming at home on Saturday.

“We played really well in the game, we were really competitive,” he said. “It was probably a really enjoyable game for the neutral, in terms of not being as one-sided as what you maybe would have expected, coming here.

“I’m really proud of how we played as a group and as a team.

“Over time, these opportunities that we’re creating, they’ll turn into goals.

“We want to win games, of course we do, and we’ve lost 1-0 in the last couple of weeks, but the longevity is in the performance, for us.

“We’re going to get more results than not if we play well, so ultimately the most important thing for us is building.”

Kelly added: “We’ve got loads of really good technical players, so if we start just shelling balls up and hoping to land on second balls and win from there, then it’s not going to work and we’re going to get beat.

“People say you’d rather not play well and win, but over the course of the season you’ll get found out if you try and just wing it.

“If we lose our structure and don’t perform well nest week against Celtic, we’ll get punished.

“Give yourself a platform to try and win the game.”

Kelly reckons Motherwell deserved to take something from Ibrox, even if the keeper admits he breathed a sigh of relief when an offside flag prevented Cyriel Dessers from winning a penalty in the second half.

He said: “We should have taken something from the game, I think everyone who was here knows that.
