Rangers legend hailed 'huge inspiration' for Hearts star after sad news emerges

Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon has hailed the influence of Rangers icon Andy Goram on his career.

The 58-year-old worked as a goalkeeper coach at Cambuslang Rangers during their West of Scotland Football League Conference B title-winning season in 2021/22.

But sad news has emerged and the goalkeeper has been given a short amount of time to live after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Gordon is Hearts captain and Scotland's number at the age of 39, and says the legendary Ibrox stopper - who has also been with Motherwell as a player and Airdrie as a coach - was pivotal to him growing up.

His ability between the sticks was unmatched during Rangers' nine-in-a-row run and admits a sad day is looming.

He said: "Everyone looked up to Andy. Anyone who wanted to be a goalkeeper wanted to be like him.

“It’s really sad news and it doesn’t look good for him. I can only wish him well over the next few weeks but it’s going to be a sad day for everyone, especially for guys like us who grew up idolising him.

“I remember how well he played for Rangers and Scotland. Some of the saves he pulled off made a massive contribution to winning games and titles.

“He was one of the reasons I thought I could make a difference by going in goal.

“I couldn’t run about very well but to see someone like Andy pull off the saves he did? Yeah, he was a huge inspiration to me growing up."
