Rangers icon tips former Celtic star to become captain of Premier League giant as he roars ' I knew' of Parkhead potential

Rangers icon Ally McCoist says former Celtic star Kieran Tierney is an ideal candidate for the Arsenal captaincy.

The left-back from Muirhouse has worn the armband on occasion this year as he continues to emerge as a key Gunners figure.

Tierney joined Arsenal in 2019 from Celtic and has been linked with moves to Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid this month.

McCoist - who hails from East Kilbride - always knew that Tierney was destined for the top after watching his Hoops performances. The Rangers icon reckons Arsenal's armband is a future achievement for the defender.

He told the Sun about the Muirhouse star: “I saw it at Celtic and how the lad developed there. Even then, I knew he would be a leader. Terrific. Undoubtedly there is a leader there.

“A lot of my mates at talkSPORT – Laura Woods, Darren Bent and Ray Parlour – all see Tierney as a future Arsenal captain.

“Captains show leadership, camaraderie, spirit and galvanise their team. Tierney is still young and inexperienced in that capacity.

“But he will grow into that. You look at him, he is mature, he speaks well, his off-the-field interviews are very good. For me, he is obvious captain material.”
