Rangers humbling in the Highlands sees Celtic hero Charlie Mulgrew suffer horror flashbacks to night livid Lennon lost it

A big bit of Charlie Mulgrew will have been punching the air on Sunday afternoon when Rangers blew a gasket in the title race at Dingwall.

But another part of the former Celtic stalwart was sent into a cold, sweaty shiver. May 4, 2011. He’s tried his best to block it out over the years - the night Celtic crashed to a shock defeat in the Highlands, Neil Lennon took it out on a wrack of water bottles and Rangers were presented with a clear path to the title.

Inverness Caley 3, Celtic 2. Even the scoreline was repeated at the weekend as Philippe Clement’s side stumbled spectacularly on the other side of the Kessock Bridge. Victory in the Highlands 13 years ago would have put Celtic two points ahead of Rangers at the top of the table with only three games to go. But the shock defeat left Hoops a point behind and sealed their fate as Walter Smith’s team took full advantage to win their last three matches and lift the title. Mulgrew - who scored an OG – endured a horror night followed quickly by a nightmarish journey back down the road for an angry team showdown with an incandescent Lennon in the middle of the night.

No wonder the flashbacks are never that far away. “It’s horrible,” winced Mulgrew when asked to offer an insight into how Sunday’s loss might have registered inside Ross County’s away dressing room at such a critical stage in the dash to the line.

He went on: “We came back to Celtic Park that night from Inverness. We watched a rerun of the game on the bus. It was horrible. We went straight into Celtic Park and straight into a team meeting in the coaches’ room.

“Lenny hadn’t cooled down any - he was just getting heated up at that point! We were told a few home truths and we all had our say on it. I had a nightmare
