Rangers fans set for Ibrox travel chaos as Glasgow subway strike hits four key home games

Rangers fans face travel chaos after Glasgow Subway workers voted for strike action with some of the walk-outs set to take place when the Ibrox side are in action at home.

Unite the union members voted by 99 per cent for strike action on a turnout of 83 per cent and it set to severely impact on Rangers supporters making their way to some sell-out fixtures next month, including the first home league game of the season against Kilmarnock on August 6 followed by the Champions League third round qualifier second against Jupiler Pro League Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise three days later.

And further 24-hour strikes will take place on August 13 and August 27 when Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are in Scottish Premiership action against St Johnstone and Ross County. Thousands of fans rely on the subway service to travel to Ibrox Stadium on a matchday.

The union says its members are increasingly being asked to work shifts at short notice, leading to “significant” work-life pressures. Willie Thomson, Unite Industrial Officer, said: “The strike ballot is a last resort for a hardworking and loyal workforce. Time and again the workers have gone above and beyond by keeping the subway running during Covid, and through a time of significant staff pressures.

“Our members are angry about the unfair duty rosters which have resulted in imposed shift changes at short notice. This is detrimental to our members’ work life balance. SPT should be in no doubt as to our members’ determination to have these rosters changed.”
