Rangers could target 'better players' at Ibrox with Europa League win

Rangers will be aiming to sign ‘better players’ in the summer transfer window if they qualify for the Champions League, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s charges are set to take on German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final on 18th May, with the winner qualifying for Europe’s elite cup competition.

Rangers reached their first European final since 2008 after seeing off RB Leipzig 3-2 on aggregate in a memorable two-legged semi-final affair.

And if they are able to get the better of Frankfurt in Sevilla’s Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, they will go into pot one of next season’s Champions League group-stage draw.

According to GOAL, the Ibrox outfit would receive a guaranteed £13 million just for qualifying for the tournament, receiving an additional £2.3m for every victory and £778,000 for every draw in the group stages.

Meanwhile, the same publication states that teams who competed in the Europa League during 2019/20 received just £2.5m for participating in the group stages, £485,000 per victory and £161,000 per draw.

The financial rewards are evidently clear for Rangers, therefore, and victory over Frankfurt could have a huge impact not only on the pitch but off it as well.

It’s set to be a busy summer for Van Bronckhorst as several of his first-team squad are either out of contract in a few months or in just over a years’ time.

And O’Rourke believes qualifying for the Champions League will allow Rangers’ Dutch tactician to target a higher calibre of player when the market reopens for business.
