Rangers and Glasgow City set for Ibrox title shootout as Celtic keep in the silverware hunt - SWPL roundup

The helicopter could well be changing direction on Sunday with final day drama assured in the SWPL next weekend.

As it stands, Glasgow City have their noses in front - just - after the claimed a vital late winner against Partick Thistle to protect their two-point cushion at the top of the table. Lauren Davidson had given City the lead before it was cancelled out in the second period by Rebecca McGowan. It took an 87th minute Priscila Chinchilla winner to puncture the tension around Petershill. City now face a trip Ibrox on Sunday against reigning champions Rangers. They thumped Hearts 6-0 yesterday and now boast the best goal difference out of the three teams; they are one goal better off than Celtic.

A Kirsty Howat hat-trick as well as a double from Brogan Hay and a Megan Bell effort enabled Rangers to get their noses in front of Celtic in terms of goal difference. “It brings our goal difference back up and we are really happy with the performance,” said Howat. “Hearts had taken point off us and we wanted to make sure that didn’t happen. I was happy to score and contribute.

“Our full focus is all on Glasgow City now. It is going to be a pretty exciting game and we have the chance to play at Ibrox which is a great for us. We will be in to recover and then start preparing for the game but it is a really exciting end to the season.”

The various permutations now point to an intriguing final day. City simply need a win against Rangers to take back their SWPL crown. Rangers, however, know that a win could still leave them under threat should Celtic beat Hearts in Airdrie by a bigger scoreline.

A draw at Ibrox and a Celtic win would also give Fran Alonso’s side their first ever SWPL title. Celtic beat Hibs 2-1 after first-half
