Ramsgate manager Lee Martin stresses the importance of competition for places after signing Greg Cundle and Kweku Lucan
Ramsgate manager Lee Martin believes competition for places is crucial after adding to his squad.
Martin signed Greg Cundle and Kweku Lucan at the end of last week, and two more new faces are on the cards.
Wing-back Cundle arrives from Martin’s old club, Welling, while forward Lucan was a free agent after spells with Folkestone and Maidstone this season.
They could feature when Ramsgate host Chichester in the Isthmian Premier this Saturday (3pm).
“It’s competition for places,” said Martin, who saw last weekend’s game at Dartford postponed due to a frozen pitch at Princes Park.
“The best players in any team I’ve been part of, the best formula is competition.
“That gets the best out of players and helps their game.
“I don’t find anything that’s done in your comfort zone is of benefit.
“I always think the best football I ever played was knowing that my shirt was on the line.
“The culture we want to create is so important and competition provides that.
“The expectations are that standards need to be kept; if not, you get replaced.”
Martin added: “Players have their roles and responsibilities and that’s why it comes down to that competition side.
“We want to make it competitive because if players aren’t doing their roles and responsibilities, it’s about accountability.
“That doesn’t mean a place where players are going to be on edge and treading on eggshells, it’s just an environment for growth and where standards are kept.
“There’s no grey areas from us and there should be no grey areas for the players.
“We know how we want to play, we want to be a forward-thinking team, we want to play into and beyond, we want runners.
“If players aren’t capable of doing it, there will be conversations until we get the right formula that we
